Stonehenge World Heritage Site is under threat by the government's new road building scheme.
The Department for Transport is planning to widen the A303, effectively making it the 'M303'. This four lane dual carriageway will run from Londond to the West Country and its path cuts right through the very heart of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site.
To quote the organisation (Save Stonehenge) 'The Stone Circle will not be harmed', but its landscape setting will be badly damaged and other important archaeological remains will be destroyed.
The governments plan is to take the central 1.3 mile long section of the new road that runs nearest to the stone circle through a tunnel, the remaining six miles of the highway would be bulldozed at ground level, or in deep trenches that would be cut into the priceless landscape. Even subtracting the tunnel, over two miles of the new four lane highway would be bulldozed through the World Heritage Site.
Having the classification of 'Motorway', there would be no access from one side to the other except by pedestrian tunnel or bridge, this would effectively cut the World Heritage Site in two, split by a noisy and unsightly four lane highway. This highway would be securely fenced and be lit night and day.
When did saving a few minutes, or finding a more expensive alternative route become more important than 5000 year old history? If the highway must follow the proposed route, then the tunnel section should be far longer than the proposed 1.3 miles.
"...barbaric... No other country in the world would contemplate treating a site which is a world icon in such a way." Lord Kennet
